Through the years, I’ve found an increasing number of allergy free foods more readily available which is a great improvement from my first few weeks and months here. I suspect the growing “free from” movement and unusual increase in food allergies have been huge factors since Luxembourg averages 155 different nationalities compacted into a small space. That’s a lot of different diets!
I’ve done a lot of research and sampling to better understand the range of “free-from” foods available in our local markets, grocery stores, restaurants, cafés and event venues. Whether medically necessary due to disease, allergy, intolerance, sensitivity, or choice, there are many reasons people need to have good information and access to a variety of foods that are “free from” the necessary ingredient(s) in order to maintain health and thrive. During these last few years, I have also had the challenge of learning, understanding and cooking for family, friends, others and small events with additional dietary restrictions to include gluten intolerance, peanut and tree nut allergies, lactose intolerance, dairy allergy, egg allergy, shellfish (including iodine), FODMAP diet, as well as (diet controlled) hypoglycemia.
My goal is to bring resources, experiences, and helpful tips together in one place to make it easier to live, in Luxembourg and the surrounding region, with a restrictive diet (not just gluten free) sharing what I, as well as others, have already found to be successful (recipes, replacements or substitutions, services, travel tips…) and might benefit others. More specifically I hope to help not only the English speaker already living here but those considering relocation to this region who might need to understand what to expect and what’s available in order to make an informed decision. I’ve spent years responding to inquiries about many of these issues and it just makes sense now to put it all together and stop repeating myself.
If you want specific information about Celiac disease click here and here to learn more. You can also connect directly to a Celiac organization in Luxembourg here. If you are curious about or have more questions concerning food allergies in general, this resource would be a great place to start. I’ve also listed these in the Resource Cupboard. There are many more resources that I hope to highlight in time as I develop this website so keep checking back. If you have any questions, I would be happy to try to help direct you to answers if I don’t have them. To email me, click here. You can also find me on Facebook and Twitter.
I need to give this disclaimer: this website is not for the purpose of giving medical advice. You must always consult with your own general practitioner or doctor when making decisions about your health and well being! I’m one human living with food allergy challenges who has been trying to find a healthy balance in my life with a strong desire to not just survive but THRIVE and share what I have learned and will continue learning.
